Life and Times of a Flippin Girl

As I’ve mentioned in earlier columns, I grew up on Alford Street. For those unfamiliar with the street names in Flippin, that is the street that runs in front of the school. It is named after John Alford, who came to Marion County in 1880. He was my great-great-grandfather (the father of Ida Alford Wood) and he and my great-great-grandmother, Mattie, settled on a farm where the town of Flippin is now located. They moved here from South Carolina after the Civil War, first spending a few years in Missouri before finally settling here.

Your Vote Matters

If you’re not convinced that every vote counts, consider the race for one of the U.S. Senate seats in Pennsylvania. At last count, the difference in the totals was 31.2 percent to 31.1 percent – two tenths of a percentage point difference.

Delivering Improved Benefits and Services for Veterans

As a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve been blessed to play an active role in updating Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policies including expanding access to health care, improving suicide prevention efforts and eliminating barriers for women veterans to receive VA care and services. I’m continuing that commitment to the men and women who served in uniform. In recent days, the House of Representatives approved a trio of legislative initiatives I championed that are now headed to the president’s desk to be signed into law.
