FOB Public Meeting with Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center

MOUNTAIN HOME – The Friends of the Baxter County Library invite everyone to join them for their public meeting on Wednesday, September 28, 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Speaker Heather Pitman, Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center, Facility Manager, will speak about the center and some of the area’s unique features.

Arkansas Weekly Gas Price Update

Average gasoline prices in Arkansas have risen 5.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.17/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 1,826 stations in Arkansas. Prices in Arkansas are 21.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 33.4 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 7.0 cents in the last week and stands at $4.93 per gallon.

Brodsky appointed to AR Boys State leadership

LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Boys State has named Andrew Brodsky as Director of Staff for the program, which has transformed the lives of young men throughout the state and beyond since 1940. Brodsky has been part of Arkansas Boys State since his delegate year in 2013, in which he represented Lakeside High School and was elected as Arkansas Boys State Speaker of the House.

Fishing on the Sac River

BA couple of weeks ago a friend and I found a stretch of the Sac River we wanted to fish, and a strange thing happened… we caught five incredibly large spotted bass on topwater lures. Often called Kentucky bass, they seldom are larger than 2 and 1/2 pounds in average waters of the Ozarks, even at four or five years of age.

Backyard Conservation 2

As we continue to discuss conservation practices in our backyard that will add beauty and diversity, we continue from last week with more about wildlife habitat in our yards. We mentioned trees and shrubs that produce nuts and berries, which, we as humans might also get some benefit from, but how about the butterflies, hummingbirds and bees.

It is getting cooler outside, and it is time to prepare your house to keep unwanted visitors from paying a visit. Rodents are looking for a place to take over for the winter.

LOWE DOWN

When the death of a young person occurs so close to home, in our own community; it’s often a wake-up call; particularly if it was due to bullying. When this occurs it is a sign that a community must do something more to stop bullying because what has been done in the past isn’t working well enough.

Early Voting Continues in MC

At the September 9 meeting, the Marion County Election Commission discussed a few items in preparation for the upcoming general election. Commission Chairman Gary Schnoor called the meeting to order at 5 p.m., with Commissioners Jimmy Lynch and Scott Carter in attendance at the Marion County Courthouse Annex Courtroom.

BCL hosts Art Odyssey Sneak Peak

MOUNTAIN HOME – The Art Odyssey starts September 29 and runs through October 1 in artists’ studios throughout Baxter and Marion Counties. Twenty-five local artists will be a part of the tour this year.
