Edith Nourse Rogers, Champion of Veterans

In photos with her fellow politicians, she often appears as the only woman in the frame. Yet, Edith Nourse Rogers never hesitated to speak up on the issues that mattered most to her. She dedicated much of her time in office to supporting Veterans and advocating for their welfare. She also fought with great success to elevate the status of women within the military. Rogers adopted the military motto “Fight hard, fight fair, and persevere” as her own and that mindset served her well as she navigated the male-dominated corridors of power during a trailblazing political career that spanned 35 years and 18 consecutive sessions of Congress.

“MCQC Committee Fails to Pass MCCC Ordinances”

Submitted by MCCS The Marion County Quorum Court Procedures & Management Committee met on October 23, 2025, and failed to pass the ordinances presented for the Community Center Project. Chairman Tommy Dean Johnson asked for a motion to open discussion on the ordinances that would allow the community center project to be placed on the March 3, 2026, ballot. Justice John Reed made the motion, but it was not seconded by Justice Tommy Dorsey, Justice Travis Hopson, or Justice Chuck Van Velkinburgh. Finally, Justice Johnson seconded the motion himself. No reason was given for the motion failure amongst the other Justices. General discussion ensued with Justice Reed questioning verbiage of the ordinances. Attorney Sam Pasthing discussed this with the group at length. He will contact Attorney Sarah Giammo, Friday, Eldridge, & Clark Firm, Little Rock and author of the ordinances for clarifications. Open discussion ensued with the JPs expressing concern over various issues with the Community Center Project. Marie Thompson, MCCS Secretary, offered additional information and urged the Justices to review the Business Plan and detailed Project Budget given to them at the April 8, 2025, Quorum Court Meeting. Besides the five committee JPs, Tommy Dorsey, Travis Hopson, Chuck Van Velkinburgh, John Reed, and Tommy Dean Johnson, Sheriff Greg Alexander and Judge Jason Stumph were present at the committee meeting.
