“Veterans and our military are my passions.” Denise “Dee” Smith, of Prince-Rhodes Unit 112 in McCrory, AR, was elected as the 2022- 23 Department President during the Annual Convention in June. Smith is eligible for American Legion Auxiliary membership through her father, Daniel P. Marchese, a WWII Army Signal Corps veteran, and her husband, Tony K. Smith, an Army Infantry and Army National Guard, Iraqi Freedom veteran.
Bull Shoals - Monday, July 4th Bull Shoals celebrated Independence Day with the Annual Fireworks over the Dam and the Bull Shoals VFW All-American Parade and Family Picnic. The parade kicked off at 12:30 p.m. led by representatives of the Bull Shoals Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, and local Fire Departments. Several businesses and community groups made floats and gave out flags and candy to the audience lining highway 178 from the Dam Site Campground to the VFW post. Community members brought dozens of classic cars and motorcycles to entertain the crowd. Bull Shoals Mayor David Nixon brought his motorcycle out to show support for the local VFW, his community, and our country. After the parade, watchers were treated to family games, live music, hot food, a beer garden, and root beer floats at the All-American Picnic hosted on the grounds of the VFW. A Harley Davidson motorcycle was raffled off at the event as well. Lines and smiling faces stretched across the parking lot.
On Thursday, July 7, the Marion County Budget Committee (MCBC) met at 5:30 p.m. to discuss proposed ordinances to be considered by the full Quorum Court (QC) on Tuesday, July 12, at 6 p.m. Claudia Brigham, Marty Nickels, Talon Vancuren, James Underwood and Joyce McCalla, Chairperson of the committee were all in attendance.
Cotter is a small little town that attracts many visitors all year long. This little town is a wonderful little jewel. People travel from all over the world to come to Cotter to enjoy the trout fishing.

Flippin – On July 3, 2022, Flippin hosted its 35th Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Festival at Hickey Park. Events started at 3 p.m. with the Bounce house and Water slide. The very popular Wall of Water by the Flippin Fire Department, and a patriotic ceremony with presentation of the flags during the Nation Anthem.

Little Rock – As summer begins, Arkansas is likely to experience heat waves causing energy bill increases for many. Arkansans have already seen a tremendous rise in energy prices due to previous severe weather, inflation, supply chain issues, the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, and the halting of domestic oil and gas drilling. Attorney General Leslie Rutledge is urging all Arkansans to take precautions to prepare their home and finances with the squelching summer months to come.
If you are like me, there were few days on the calendar that I looked forward to more than the last day of school when I was young. As a parent, I understand how challenging the summer months are to keeping kids busy. Communities offer specialized programs to engage youth through public library reading programs, sports camps and Boys and Girls Clubs. For young people aiming to challenge themselves and make a difference in the lives of others, there is the Congressional Award.
Today I’d like to talk about the Fourth of July, or Independence Day, in Arkansas, the state with enough lakes, rivers, hiking trails, and outdoor festivals to accommodate 3 million Arkansans and visitors as we celebrate the 246 years of our Nation’s independence. And of particular importance, is our beautiful state parks.
