We hear a lot of talk in our lives about planning for the future. Much of that talk starts in our youth as we start to invest in our adult lives. Once we reach adulthood the conversation becomes very financial oriented as we begin to save money for retirement, save for purchasing a house, save for having children, save for vacations and save for everyday life. As overwhelming as financial planning can be, we also are planning for many other things in our lives.
Last week I wrote about my dream to create a museum along Highway 63 between Houston and Licking, dedicated to the early history of the old-time Ozarks and the Big Piney River where I grew up. I was in Nebraska in October and on the way home I stopped at a restaurant in Lincoln. A man walked up to me and said he remembered me from 1978 when he was a taxidermist in Lincoln.

This centuries-old technique has been used to grow food and flowers, adding beauty and productivity from the ground up. Even those gardening on small city lots, balconies and decks can go vertical to expand their gardening opportunities.

TApproximately 75 volunteers from the Bull Shoals VFW Post 1341, Bull Shoals American Legion Post 431, Bull Shoals VFW Auxiliary, VFW Riders Group, and VFW supporters were served a Barbeque Rib dinner in appreciation for their many hours of volunteering over the past year. They give hours of their time to serve and assist veterans, provide and deliver medical equipment to veterans, visit veterans in care homes, deliver quilts to veterans, assist with Fish Fry dinners, cooking and serving free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for veterans and the local community. (All monies from dinners go into the Veterans’ Relief Fund). They also send Troop Boxes to active military, organize and have a Children’s Christmas party, assist with Toy runs, have special recognition dinners to honor our local Police and Fire Departments, and many more events and projects for veterans during the year that are too numerous to list. The VFW and American Legion could not survive without the many dedicated, compassionate and hardworking volunteers.
Washington, DC- February 4, 2022....Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) today spoke on the House floor to honor the life and legacy of the late Lois Bouton of Rogers, who was affectionately known as “The Coast Guard Lady.” Lois—a World War II veteran and member of the Greatest Generation—had a devotion to service and the U.S. Coast Guard that followed her through life. Womack’s tribute recognized her unmatched work to uplift her fellow Coasties by writing thousands upon thousands of letters to those protecting us from coast to coast. This lifelong patriot will be laid to rest in Arkansas on Monday, February 7th.
