Life and Times of a Flippin Girl

As I’ve mentioned in earlier columns, I grew up on Alford Street. For those unfamiliar with the street names in Flippin, that is the street that runs in front of the school. It is named after John Alford, who came to Marion County in 1880. He was my great-great-grandfather (the father of Ida Alford Wood) and he and my great-great-grandmother, Mattie, settled on a farm where the town of Flippin is now located. They moved here from South Carolina after the Civil War, first spending a few years in Missouri before finally settling here.

Marion County Arkansas Heritage Society

Our area of the Ozarks is one of the richest regions of the United States in archaeological remains and they show evidence of Indians having lived here from the most primitive times. Remains of these ancient people which have been found in the dry caves and bluff shelters shed light on the prehistoric past even more than the stone artifacts found along our streams on the open sites.

New Downtown Bentonville Hotel to Serve NWA Visitors and Locals

Bentonville, Arkansas – A new hotel is coming to the core of Downtown Bentonville, serving business and leisure travelers in true Northwest Arkansas style. This new, independent hotel is complete with a variety of amenities and services to support the visitors and the Bentonville community. The hotel is tentatively scheduled to begin operations in Summer 2024. The development of the hotel was first announced in June 2018.

Multiple emergency incidents kick off a busy summer at Buffalo National River

Harrison – Throughout the week of May 16, 2022, Buffalo National River staff partnered with municipal and state agencies to respond quickly and professionally to multiple emergency incidents that occurred within the park. Emergency services personnel reacted swiftly and decisively while at times responding to multiple incidents occurring at once.

The History of Bruno

After World War I, a wave of socialism and unionism was the “in thing” for liberals and intellectuals. A Farmers Union was organized at Bruno. The theme was that farmers were being exploited by merchants and bankers. The Union urged farmers to become their own manager and merchants.

Music Fills the Air

Music filled the air at Bull Shoals Lake – White River State Park May 17 when the University of Arkansas Chamber Music Tour played on the patio of the Visitor Center overlooking the White River. The outdoor setting was a wonderful venue for the student groups to share their talents. Three outstanding student ensembles included Castalia Saxophone Quartet, Hawksbill Winds and Loblolly Brass Quintet. All musicians are students at UA Fayetteville. The groups have performed and competed at various events and competitions.
