James A. Gaston Butterfly Garden
If you have not been to the White River State Park Visitors Center and walked through the James A. Gaston Butterfly Garden, you are missing out on one of the beautiful gardens maintained by Marion County Master Gardeners. The garden was originally established in 2007, with a $5,000 grant from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Project WILD. The grant was awarded to a combination of agencies including Crooked Creek Conservation District, Arkansas State Parks, and Marion County Master Gardeners for a Butterfly Garden to teach youth of all ages about wildlife, conservation and the environment.
Huckabee Sanders visits Yellville
Sarah Huckabee Sanders visited Marion County on Tuesday, April 5, around 5:30 p.m. to rally support for her campaign to become the next Governor of the State of Arkansas. Huckabee Sanders addressed a crowd of approximately 300 people to a crowd in the parking lot outside of Black Sheep BBQ restaurant.

Little Rock – The Arkansas 529 Education Savings Plan, established in 1999, is getting a new name to reflect the plan’s ever-evolving benefits more accurately for Arkansans. It will now be called the Arkansas Brighter Future 529 plan, Treasurer of State Dennis Milligan, whose office administers the program, announced today.
Womack Awarded the Dick Trammel Good Neighbor Award
Washington, D.C. — Tonight, Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) was announced as the recipient of the “Dick Trammel Good Neighbor Award” from the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. The Dick Trammel Good Neighbor Award - the Rogers community’s highest honor - was first awarded in 1974. Honoring my grandmother . . .
March is Women’s History Month and as I’m writing this column it’s ending. It seems appropriate to discuss the life of my paternal grandma, Charlotte Fleming, who passed from this life on March 18 and lived a century’s worth of history. They say that with the passing of our elders along with them goes a library of history. This could be said of my grandmother. She was one of 11 children growing up during the Depression, and as a young wife, raised her young children alone during World War II while her husband fought in the war. She was a twin and she and my grandpa would also be parents to a set of twins. She was a strong woman who learned to stand up for herself at an early age. She and her husband, Roy were a part of what has been called the “Greatest Generation”. They each possessed the type of character that sadly, seems rare today. They had a solid sense of integrity and robust work ethics.
