Hunting A Good Place to Fish

Sometimes, to be a successful fisherman you have to become a diligent hunter. A friend and I did just that a few days ago, going up a swollen and muddy Sac River, looking for some tributaries where white bass and walleye might have moved into warming, clearer water. We found one, which had no walleye or white bass, but it was a beautiful spot with the clearer, deep water we were looking for.

Summer bird feeding continued

This week we discuss cautions on summer feeding. While a greater variety of foods will attract more birds, backyard birders should take care not to offer less nutritious options during the summer when baby birds need the best food for healthy growth. Kitchen scraps, for example, are not suitable to feed birds during the summer. While small quantities of bread, cooked rice, and other scraps won’t harm adult birds when offered as very rare treats, these foods offer no nutrition for nestlings and other young birds. Avoid offering this “bird junk food” during the months when young birds need a healthy diet to grow into strong, mature adults.

For the Birds

Years ago, I spoke to the Audubon Society Chapter at Pittsburg Kansas, and enjoyed getting to spend some time with folks who truly love all aspects of nature, especially birds. I think my talk went over really well except for my woodpecker recipes. On a more serious side, I myself have had a great fascination with birds since I was very small. I wanted to grow up and be a waterfowl biologist when I was only eleven years old, and floated the Big Piney River in the fall, sneaking up on wood ducks and hooded mergansers and mallards and teal and other birds.

Spring is Sprung. Or has it?

They say it’s Spring. But how do you know for sure? At first glance, it’s hard to tell it apart from Fall. Sure, the snow is melting. But underneath, there are the dead, brown leaves. Again. You may wonder: What the heck? I thought I bagged those up?! No, you bagged other leaves. But then more, other leaves fell and/or blew into your yard. Then it snowed. And you cannot bag leaves under the snow. Thus, there are the dead, brown leaves. Again. Sigh.
